SCOTT, Chad Robert

February 8, 1979 - August 24, 2015

Chad Robert Scott born February 8, 1979 to Bob and Janie Scott in Calgary, Alberta passed away suddenly on August 24, 2015. Chad grew up on the family farm near Michichi, Alberta and attended the Delia school until his graduation in 1997.  Growing up Chad enjoyed hockey, volleyball and almost all other sports.  Farming was a big part of his life and the farm had the usual assortment of pigs (not his favorite chore), cows, chickens and any other farm animal you could find. Chad loved any kind of animal and was also  a member of the Delia 4H Beef Club.  He then went on to attend SAIT and Red Deer College to obtain his journeyman welder’s certificate in 2000.   Chad  became an accomplished welder, owning and operating his own business Rough Stock Welding Inc. Chad married his loving wife Michelle in 2003.  In 2008, they were blessed with the birth of their beautiful twin baby girls, Kayla and Kelsey. In his younger years Chad aspired to live the life of a rodeo bareback rider but due to an injury he was forced to become a spectator rather than a participant.  His love of the sport did not die and he became an avid chuckwagon fan. The thing Chad loved the most was being a welder. He was meticulous about his work, his truck and his shop.  Even though the work was hard, cold and isolated he worked the far north for many years.  When the girls were born he did try to find work closer to home and worked for a period of time for Crew Energy Ltd. as an oilfield operator.  But the far north and the big pipelines drew Chad back and he went back to doing the thing he loved the most. Chad was also an avid hunter and regularly headed into the deep bush to find those prized antlers which he displayed proudly in his home. He enjoyed helping his Dad and his brother Cody with the farming when they needed his help. With the slow down in the oilpatch Chad had been home since the Spring and was able to spend some quality time with his cherished little girls fishing, catching bugs and taking many adventures. Chad is survived by his loving wife Michelle and their twin daughters Kayla and Kelsey.  His parents Bob and Janie Scott.  His brother Cody and his wife Joleen and their two boys Chance and Colby.  Michelle’s parents, Ed & Debbie Van De Ryse and brother in law Ed and neice Lisa.  He is also survived by numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and extended families.  He also leaves a large group of friends and work associates. A celebration of Chad’s life will be held Friday, September 4 at 2:00 pm in the Delia Community Hall with Rev. Katherine Freeman officiating.  The family requests that In lieu of flowers  Uncle Cody and Auntie Joleen have opened up a ‘Child’s Trust Account’, if you would like to make a donation please make cheques payable to Kayla and/or Kelsey Scott at Chinook Financial branches in Drumheller or Hanna, Alberta or send cheques to Mr. & Mrs. Cody Scott, PO Box 1371, Hanna, AB T0J 1P0 or the charity of one’s choice.  Courtney Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.

NILL, Miranda Berdine

March 23, 1978 - October 8, 2015

NILL- Miranda Berdine ~ means an admirable and extraordinary person. She was all of that and more. Miranda was born in Hanna on March 23, 1978 on a beautiful, warm, sunny spring day. She passed away in Drumheller on October 8, 2015 at the age of 37 years on a beautiful, warm, sunny autumn day. Warmth and beauty were her spirit. Sundre area became her home over the past 15 years and she was her happiest there. Although Miranda’s life was cut short she lived her life to the fullest doing what she loved to do, riding and training horses. Miranda truly had a gift with forming a connection to horses. Miranda started her schooling in Red Deer, then Spruce View and graduated from Delia High School. She worked at numerous jobs but found her niche running heavy equipment. Throughout her formative years she belonged to the Delia 4-H club and to Alberta High School Rodeo Association; excelling in both and winning many awards along the way. As an adult Miranda’s passion was training barrel horses and competing in many varied competitions. She and Derby were a force to be reckoned with at many barrel races. They won many prizes and dollars which kept Miranda competing and striving to be even better. Miranda faced her last battle with bravery, optimism and her usual sense of humour. Sadly she lost that battle and leaves her family with a huge hole in their hearts. Left here to carry her torch are her Mom, Sheila (Don), Sister, Celeste (Lane) Montpellier, Brothers, Justin (Candace) Newman, Milan Howard, Kalon (Alisha) Howard, three nephews, Dillon and Carson Montpellier and Kolten Howard, one niece Evalynn Miranda Howard. He attended Olds College, and even served as a supervisor for an area school until a proper teacher could be acquired. He joined his father, Andy, on the family farm, and when his father passed away in 1963 he carried on working the land by himself with his young family beside him. Albert married Emma Miller from the Scapa area in 1957. In 1971 they purchased a home in Delia and settled in the town. He actively farmed until retiring in 1996. In 2009 he and Emma moved to Drumheller. Albert was an avid community participant. He was involved in curling, choir, and the school board as well as an integral member of area farming organizations. The Delia Curling Club benefited from his love of the sport as he not only entered curling competitively but he was always part of the local square draw and bonspiels, served on the executive and supported and coached young curlers. He gave his time and dedication to the Masonic Grand Lodge of Alberta, the Ag Society, and was a founding member of the Delia C2000 Farm Educational Group. Along with supporting all the local social activities, he and Emma loved to travel. They drove the highway to Alaska, camped through the B.C. interior and Alberta’s mountains and prairies, and kept exploring right to the east coast. They flew to Florida, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and Hawaii, finally becoming snowbirds with yearly trips to Arizona. In later years, Albert most enjoyed chatting with friends and family; be it politics, farming or sports. He was especially proud that the family farm had endured and adapted for more than 110 years. Most particularly missed, will be Al’s positive attitude, his certain smile, and his gracious welcome to one and all. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Delia Community Center on Friday, October 30 at 2 p.m. If desired, in memory of Albert, donations may be made to the Delia Curling Club (for re-roofing) or to one of his favourite charities, STARS air ambulance. ZUKE, Karen Marie (nee HOROBEC)

September, 16, 1972 – October 21, 2015

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Karen Marie Zuke (nee Horobec) on Wednesday, October 21st at Etobicoke, ON. Karen was predeceased by her father Paul Horobec in 2001, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her husband Ron Zuke of Airdrie, Alberta, her mother Diane Horobec, sister Gail Horobec (Mike), nephew Zenon Horobec of Caliento, MB, in laws, Joe and Ruth Zuke, Gladstone, Sister In Law Carol Grant (Rob), and niece Rebecca Grant, Winnipeg. Karen grew up on the family farm in Caliento, MB. After graduating from Shevchenko School in Vita, Karen moved to Steinbach in 1990 and began working with Golden West Broadcasting at AM 1250 (CHSM Radio), as a creative writer. A promotion saw her transfer to Altona (CFAM 950), to become Creative Coordinator for Radio Southern Manitoba. Karen met her husband Ron (from CKMW 1570) in 1996 at the company’s annual golf tournament. They married in Sundown, MB on October 10th, 1998. Ron and Karen lived in Altona, before moving back to Caliento in 1999 for a short period to help out with the family business, Horobec Foods. They moved to Portage la Prairie in 2000, where both Ron and Karen worked for CFRY Radio. Karen eventually became Online Services Manager for Golden West, but her desire to fulfill a lifelong dream of attending university came to fruition in 2007 when she enrolled in the Internet Systems Specialist Diploma program at the University of Winnipeg. Karen commuted from Portage la Prairie to downtown Winnipeg for one year, with only a one week break, completing the program in October 2008. A promotion for Ron, a month later saw the two of them move to Drumheller, Alberta, as Ron worked on launching a new FM station for Golden West in early 2009. Karen launched her own web development business KarenZuke.com in Drumheller and worked with many businesses throughout Western Canada. In 2012, Golden West transferred Ron to their newly acquired radio station (Air 106.1 FM) in Airdrie, AB, where he and Karen resided up until her passing during a trip to Toronto. Ron and Karen loved to travel and had many adventures over the years, including sports tourism vacations to follow the Winnipeg Jets & the Toronto Blue Jays. They loved Costa Rica, visiting 3 times in the past 4 years. This past summer they went on a trip of a lifetime, spending 15 days in Europe in July & August. Visits to London, Venice, Rome and Paris were the highlights of their trip, as Karen was especially excited to return to Paris, where she had visited once previously. Ron and Karen celebrated 17 years of marriage, just 11 days before her passing. Karen lived her life to the fullest and brightened the day of whomever she crossed paths with. She was a creative person, who loved to draw and later used her talents to design award winning logos, performed beautiful landscaping, home renovations and decorating while developing and hosting over 100 websites for businesses throughout Canada and the U.S. It comes as no surprise that one of her favourite quotes came from a cartoonist - The Family Circle’s Bil Keane.
Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift.
That’s why it’s called the present. – Bil Keane
A private memorial service for family and friends was held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Wednesday, October 28th. Ash interment will take place at a later date at St John’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Caliento, MB. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Karen may be made to: St John’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery Fund: c/o Olga Bodnarchuk - Treasurer, Box 38, Vita, MB, R0A 2K0. The family wishes to express appreciation and gratitude for all the prayers, words of encouragement, cards, and expressions of sympathy received from family and friends.
